This angle iron size chart lists standard steel angle sizes with thickness, weight per foot, weight per meter and the weight of a 20′ bar. Use it to estimate shipping and handling weight, compare profiles, or check a size on a drawing. Sizes that SteelFront sells are linked, so you can go straight to the price.

How to read an angle size
Angle is written leg x leg x thickness. “L3 x 3 x 1/4″ means two 3″ legs, 1/4″ thick. For unequal legs, engineering tables list the long leg first (L4 x 3 x 1/4), though sellers sometimes list the short leg first (3″ x 4″ x 1/4”). Both describe the same shape. Measure legs on the outside, from the heel (the back of the corner) to the toe (the end of each leg). Measure thickness at the toe.
Small angle iron sizes (bar-size angle)
Angles with legs under 2″ are called bar-size angles. They are hot-rolled like larger structural angle, but they are listed in mill bar-size tables rather than the AISC structural tables.

Roll-formed angle sizes and gauges
Roll-formed angle is bent from flat sheet or strip, so its thickness is often given as a gauge. The table shows nominal gauge thickness (Manufacturers’ Standard Gauge, uncoated steel) and the weight of the roll-formed angle SteelFront sells.
| SteelFront size | Gauge | Nominal thickness (in) | Weight (lb/ft) | Product |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-1/2″ x 1-1/2″ | 11 | 0.1196 | 1.18 | Roll formed angle iron |
| 2″ x 2″ | 11 | 0.1196 | 1.60 | Roll formed angle iron |
| 1-1/2″ x 1-1/2″, punched 1/2″ | 1/8″ | 0.125 | 1.07-1.12 | Punched angle iron |
| 2″ x 2″, punched 1/2″ | 1/8″ | 0.125 | 1.50-1.55 | Punched angle iron |
| 2″ x 2″, punched 3/8″ | 11 / 12 | 0.1196 / 0.1046 | 1.58 / 1.26 | Garage door angle iron |
| 1-1/4″ x 1-1/4″, punched 3/8″ | 14 / 15 | 0.0747 / 0.0673 | 0.63 / 0.56 | Garage door angle iron |
Roll-formed weights are SteelFront catalog shipping weights. Punched angle weighs slightly less than solid angle of the same size.
How to calculate angle iron weight
For any size not listed, a close estimate is:
Weight (lb/ft) = (leg A + leg B – thickness) x thickness x 3.4
All dimensions are in inches. The factor 3.4 is the weight in pounds of one square inch of steel, one foot long. For example, 2″ x 2″ x 1/4″: (2 + 2 – 0.25) x 0.25 x 3.4 = 3.19 lb/ft, which matches the table. Multiply by length in feet for the weight of a piece, and by the number of pieces for a load.
Angle iron SteelFront stocks
- Structural angle iron: A36, 1″ x 1″ x 1/8″ to 3″ x 4″ x 1/4″
- Punched structural angle: A36, 1/2″ bolt holes on 2″ centers
- Roll formed angle iron: 11 gauge, 1-1/2″ and 2″
- Punched angle iron: 1/8″, 1/2″ bolt holes on 2″ centers
- Garage door angle iron: 11 to 15 gauge, 3/8″ bolt holes 1″ apart
All come in 1′, 2′, 6′, 10′, 15′ and 20′ lengths. Compare them on the angle iron page, or read about the types of angle iron and galvanized angle iron.

Frequently asked questions
What are the standard sizes of angle iron?
Equal-leg angle runs from 1/2″ x 1/2″ up to 8″ x 8″ and larger. The most common shop sizes are 1″ x 1″, 1-1/2″ x 1-1/2″, 2″ x 2″ and 3″ x 3″, in 1/8″ to 1/4″ thickness. Unequal-leg angle comes in pairs such as 3″ x 2″, 4″ x 3″ and 6″ x 4″. Mills ship 20′ and 40′ lengths.
How much does angle iron weigh per foot?
2″ x 2″ x 1/8″ angle weighs 1.65 lb/ft. 2″ x 2″ x 1/4″ weighs 3.19 lb/ft. 3″ x 3″ x 1/4″ weighs 4.90 lb/ft, and 4″ x 4″ x 1/4″ weighs 6.60 lb/ft. Look up any other size in the charts above.
How much does 20 feet of 2×2 angle iron weigh?
About 33 lb for 2″ x 2″ x 1/8″, 48.8 lb for 3/16″ and 63.8 lb for 1/4″ (nominal hot-rolled weights).
How thick is 3×3 angle iron?
3″ x 3″ angle is made from 3/16″ up to 1/2″ thick. 3″ x 3″ x 1/4″ (4.90 lb/ft) is the most common, and it is the size SteelFront stocks.
How do you calculate the weight of angle iron?
Weight in lb/ft is roughly (leg A + leg B – thickness) x thickness x 3.4, with all dimensions in inches. For 3″ x 3″ x 1/4″: (3 + 3 – 0.25) x 0.25 x 3.4 = 4.89 lb/ft. The 3.4 factor is the weight of a 1 in² by 1 ft bar of steel (0.2836 lb/in³ x 12 in).
Does angle iron come in 40 ft lengths?
Yes. Mills roll 20′ and 40′ lengths, and many sellers offer shorter pieces. SteelFront sells angle in lengths from 1′ to 20′.
What size angle iron do I need?
It depends on span, load and how the angle is connected. As a rule, go up in leg size before thickness: a deeper leg adds more stiffness than extra thickness. Any angle that supports people, equipment or a structure should be sized by an engineer.
