How to choose a tank manway
1. Diameter
Diameter is the clear opening a person or tool passes through. 24″ is the most common shell manway size for people entering a tank, and 20″ is common on roofs. 30″ and 36″ openings make room for a worker in a harness or for equipment to go in and out. 16″ and 18″ fit small tanks and inspection-only access. If your tank is built to a design standard, use the size the standard or your tank drawing calls for. See the manway sizes guide for API 650 reference sizes.
2. Neck length (projection)
The neck is the ring that welds into the tank and carries the flange out from the shell. A 4″ neck sits close to the tank. A 7″ neck leaves more room for a wrench behind the flange. A 12″ neck clears insulation, a stiffening ring or a nearby nozzle.
3. Neck and flange thickness
Match the neck plate to your shell plate and the design your fabricator or engineer is working to. A thicker flange stays flatter as the bolts are tightened, which helps the gasket seal on larger diameters. A 1/4″ flange keeps weight and cost down on small, low-head tanks. 1/2″ to 3/4″ flanges are the usual choice for 30″ and 36″ shell manways and taller tanks.
4. Bolt pattern: single or double punched
Choose the same pattern for the manway and the cover so the holes line up. The Fibreflex gasket is double punched, so one gasket fits either pattern.
5. Cover thickness
Covers come in 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″ and 3/4″ plate. Thicker covers hold their shape better on large diameters and under liquid head. On many builds the cover matches the flange thickness. Covers are sold separately.
Round manway or rectangular cleanout?
A round manway is the standard entry point on the side or roof of a tank. A rectangular cleanout sits at the bottom of the shell, so sludge, sand and paraffin can be shoveled or washed out. Our cleanout frame has a 24″ x 36″ opening.
Installation notes
- Cleanout frames and cleanout covers ship as raw (unfinished) steel, ready to weld, prime and coat with the tank.
- The manway neck is welded into a cut opening in the tank shell or roof. Weld size, reinforcement pads and testing follow your tank design. Use a qualified welder.
- Seat the gasket, bolt the cover evenly in a star pattern, and re-check bolt tightness after the first fill.
- Entering a tank through a manway is confined-space entry. Follow OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 and your company’s entry permit process.
Where our manways are used
Steel tank fabricators, oilfield operators and plant maintenance crews order these parts for new tanks and for repairs. Frequently asked questions
What is a manway on a tank?
A manway is a bolted access opening on a storage tank or vessel, big enough for a person to climb through for inspection, cleaning or repair. It has a neck welded into the tank, a flange on the neck, a gasket and a removable cover bolted to the flange.
What is the difference between a manway and a manhole?
In tank work they mean the same thing: a person-sized access opening with a bolted cover. “Manhole” is the term used in API 650 and older specifications. “Manway” is the more common term among fabricators and parts suppliers. Read more in manway vs manhole vs thief hatch.
What size manway do I need?
For people entering a tank, 24″ is the most common shell size. 20″ is common on roofs. Use 30″ or 36″ when workers wear rescue harnesses or equipment has to pass through. Always follow the size on your tank design or the standard it is built to.
Is the cover included with the manway?
No. The round manway cover and the gasket are separate items. Order all three in the same diameter, and order the manway and cover in the same single- or double-punched pattern.
What gasket fits a SteelFront manway?
The 1/8″ Fibreflex manway gasket in the same diameter. It is double punched, so it fits single- and double-punched manways. The rectangular cleanout frame uses the 2″ wide neoprene gasket roll.
What is a cleanout on a storage tank?
A cleanout is a rectangular opening at the bottom of the tank shell, used to remove settled solids. SteelFront’s cleanout frame has a 24″ x 36″ opening and a 28″ x 40″ outside size, and it takes a bolted 1/4″ or 3/8″ cover.
Can I order a hinged or davit manway?
Not online. SteelFront sells bolted manways with separate covers. For hinged, davit-arm or other engineered manways, contact Wifco Steel Products, our parent company and manufacturer.
