Parts for Aboveground Fuel & Heating Oil Storage Tanks

Heating oil dealers, fuel distributors, fleet fueling operators and the shops that build their tanks all need the same basic hardware: heads, openings, lifting points, nameplates, supports and threaded connections. SteelFront makes these fuel tank parts in Hutchinson, Kansas and lists them online with prices. A tank builder can buy a single obround head, and a fleet yard can replace a cracked manway cover, without a quote.

Where these parts get used

  • Heating oil tanks: basement and outdoor obround tanks.
  • Fleet and farm fueling: horizontal aboveground diesel and gasoline tanks on saddles.
  • Bulk plants and distributors: larger vertical tanks with manways, ladders and nameplates.
  • Generator and equipment fuel: small tanks and day tanks built by local fabricators.

Obround tank heads

The SteelFront obround tank head is commonly used on basement and fuel tanks. It’s formed from 13 gauge raw steel, measures 44.25″ x 27.125″ x 1.25″, and weighs 30.5 lb. Its formed legs give it a rigid surface that wraps around the tank body for welding. Because it ships raw, it can be welded and then coated along with the rest of the tank.

Manways and gaskets

Larger fuel tanks need an access opening for inspection and cleaning. Our round manway is configurable from 16″ to 36″ in diameter, with 4″, 7″ or 12″ necks, several neck and flange thicknesses, and single- or double-punched flanges. Pair it with a cover and a 1/8″ Fibreflex gasket. “Fuel tank manhole gasket” is a common search because gaskets wear out with every opening, so keep spares in your shop. For rectangular openings, the cleanout frame, cover and neoprene roll work as a set.

Supports and lifting points

Threaded connections

Forged steel half couplings are threaded on one side for welding into a tank shell or head. Full couplings are threaded on both sides to join two pipes. Both are rated up to 3000 psi and come in 1/4″, 1/2″, 1″, 1-1/4″, 1-1/2″, 2″ and 3″ pipe sizes, raw finish.

Nameplates and identification

Tanks are expected to carry a legible data plate. SteelFront nameplate brackets with legs weld to the shell, standing off enough for a proper weld. The no-leg version is for custom mounting. Both come in several gauges with optional 1/8″ plaque holes.

Standards that apply to the finished tank

UL 142 is the UL standard for steel aboveground tanks for flammable and combustible liquids. It covers shop-fabricated primary, secondary and diked atmospheric tanks in cylindrical, rectangular or obround shapes. The standard says these tanks are intended for installation under codes including NFPA 30, NFPA 30A and NFPA 31. It doesn’t apply to API 12D or API 12F production tanks, or to tanks mounted on trailers. If your facility stores more than 1,320 gallons of oil aboveground, the EPA’s SPCC rule may also apply. These rules govern the tank and the facility, not individual components, so compliance is the responsibility of the tank manufacturer and owner.

Access platforms at fuel islands

Bulk plants often need short stairs and platforms for top loading or gauging. Our 9″ x 26″ perforated grip and bar grating treads, walkway pans and toe boards assemble with punched angle and bolts.

Frequently asked questions

What is an obround tank head used for?

An obround head closes the end of an obround (flat-sided oval) tank, a shape common in basement heating oil and small fuel tanks. SteelFront’s head is 13 gauge raw steel, 44.25″ x 27.125″ x 1.25″, with formed legs that fit around the tank body.

Is UL 142 the standard for aboveground fuel tanks?

UL 142 covers shop-fabricated steel aboveground atmospheric tanks for flammable and combustible liquids, in cylindrical, rectangular or obround shapes. It excludes tanks covered by API 12D and 12F. It applies to the finished tank, so certification is the tank manufacturer’s responsibility.

What pressure rating do your couplings have?

Our forged steel half and full couplings are rated up to 3000 psi and ship in raw steel. Sizes are listed by the pipe diameter they accept, from 1/4″ to 3″.

Which lug should I use to lift a fuel tank?

For forklift or cable handling, use the lift lug (P-lug), welded to a 1/4″ baseplate or unwelded. D-ring and #6 triangle lugs are other lifting styles. The tank designer should size the lifting points for the full tank weight.

Do you sell gaskets for fuel tank manways?

Yes. 1/8″ Fibreflex gaskets fit every SteelFront round manway diameter from 16″ to 36″, and a 2″ x 100 ft neoprene roll fits our rectangular cleanout frames. Confirm the gasket material is compatible with the fuel you store.
